Score Factor

A score factor is a specific characteristic or variable, such as payment history or amounts owed, that a credit scoring model uses when calculating a credit score.

In detail

A score factor is an individual element or category of information from a consumer's credit report that a credit scoring model evaluates as part of its calculation. Common score factors include payment history, amounts owed, length of credit history, new credit, and credit mix. Each factor represents a distinct type of data, and the model assigns a weight to it based on how predictive that data is within the model's design. The resulting credit score is a numerical summary derived from these factors, but the factors themselves are the inputs rather than the output. Different credit scoring models may use different sets of score factors, and they may weight the same factor differently. For example, one model might place greater emphasis on payment history, while another might give more relative weight to amounts owed. Score factors are not fixed rules that apply identically across all lenders or all scoring systems. When a consumer receives a credit score, the accompanying explanation often lists the key score factors that most influenced that particular score, sometimes called reason codes. These codes describe which aspects of the credit report had the most impact on the score at that time. Federal law, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act, governs how consumers may access their credit reports and, in certain situations, how they are informed about the factors that affected a credit decision. Score factors are descriptive categories, not actions or recommendations. They simply identify the variables a model considered. Understanding what a score factor is can help consumers read a credit score disclosure more precisely, but it does not by itself indicate what any particular consumer should do.
