Late Payment

A late payment is a payment made after the due date set by a creditor, which can be reported to credit reporting companies and may appear on a credit report as a derogatory mark.

In detail

A late payment is a payment that is made after the due date established by a creditor, lender, or service provider. When a payment is not received by the due date, the creditor may assess a late fee and may report the account status to national credit reporting companies. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), credit reporting companies must follow specific rules for how late payments are reported and how long they may remain on a consumer's credit report. Most creditors report late payments in 30-day increments, such as 30 days late, 60 days late, or 90 days late, with more severe delinquencies reflecting a greater number of missed due dates. Late payment information typically remains on a credit report for seven years from the date of the original delinquency. The FCRA sets this seven-year period as a general rule for most adverse information, though certain exceptions exist, such as for bankruptcies. A late payment is considered a derogatory mark because it indicates that the account was not paid as agreed. The presence of late payments can affect a consumer's credit history and may be factored into credit scoring models, but the specific impact depends on the individual's overall credit profile and the scoring model used. It is important to note that not every missed due date results in a reported late payment. Many creditors have a grace period and do not report a payment as late until it is at least 30 days past due. A payment that is a few days late may incur a late fee but may not appear on a credit report. Additionally, account status categories such as 'current' or 'delinquent' are used by creditors to describe the payment history on an account, and late payments are one type of derogatory mark that can be reported.
